S.H.A.P.E. Assessment Results
Thank you D. Paul Jones for taking the SHAPE Assessment. We encourage you to meet with a Church Leader that you respect, to go over your results, so that they can help you discover a place to serve in the church and/or community, and also to help you fine-tune your 5 Main Focuses/Priorities listed at the bottom of this email under the ‘Wrapping it up’ section. May God Bless You!

This gift’s evident in my life in the following ways:
I have been teaching Sunday School to teens off and on since 1979 and coaching teen Bible quiz since 1988. I enjoy teaching and participating in Bible study.
This gift’s evident in my life in the following ways:
I believe that in the last 40 – 50 years Americans have turned away from the Bible. Because of teaching evolution many Americans think the Bible is outdated and obsolete. Others refer to its teaching as hateful. Corinthians says the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing. I strongly believe the Bible is supernatural because of two reasons: 1) prophesies being fulfilled 2) science knowledge that far preceded man’s knowledge of science. I am fascinated how the nation of Israel came back into existence in 1948 and even more fascinated how they exist today given how many people hate their existence. The whole story ends with Christ returning. I think all Christians should be more knowledgeable about this topic.
This gift’s evident in my life in the following ways:
I have always enjoyed teaching Sunday School, coaching, tutoring, and just plain being involved in the lives of young people.
[H]eart
1. Teaching the Bible to young people – this is through Bible Study or Bible Quiz
2. Get involved in people’s lives. This includes having them over to the house, teaching people how to drive, helping them with their math homework, taking them to college visits, whatever –
3. I am very interested in the topic of Creation vs Evolution. I see that even people in the church are doubting the truth of the Bible because they hear “Millions and Billions” over and over.
For 40 years I have worked with teens. My wife has mostly worked with children. This is not ideal – since we have moved and are basically starting over – it may be time to rethink this

Your Primary was ‘The Beaver’, with your Secondary coming in as ‘The Lion’, and here are the descriptions of your Personalities, and how they can be used for God
Beaver- Organized. Beavers think that there is a right way to do everything and they want to do it exactly that way. Beaver personalities are very creative. They desire to solve everything. Desire to take their time and do it right. Beavers do not like sudden changes. They need reassurance.
Strength: High standards, order, respect
Weakness: Unrealistic expectations of self & others, too perfect.
Limitation: Seeing the optimistic side of things, expressing flexibility
Lion- This personality likes to lead. The lion is good at making decisions and is very goal-oriented. They enjoy challenges, difficult assignments, and opportunity for advancement. Because lions are thinking of the goal, they can step on people to reach it. Lions can be very aggressive and competitive. Lions must learn not to be too bossy or to take charge in other’s affairs.
Strength: Goal-oriented, strong, direct
Weakness: Argumentative, too dictatorial
Limitation: Doesn’t understand that directness can hurt others, hard time expressing grace
[E]xperience
My family attended a Christian Church. I got baptized at age 10 but somewhat fell away from attending. On New Years eve when I was a Sophomore, I made a resolution to start going back. I went to a Nazarene church in Fortville, IN. As a teen I went to the altar many times.
We moved several times from 1975 to 1998 due to joining the Army, going to college, joining the Navy, moving to Ohio, during those times I was a Board Member Fortville, IN Nazarene, Oregon, OH Nazarene, and Perrysburg, OH Nazarene. I was a Sunday School teacher, Youth Director, Quiz Coach, Baseball and Basketball coach.
Board Member, Sunday School teacher, Bus driver and local quiz coach at Solid Rock Ministries. This is an Assembly of God church in inner-city Toledo. 18 years.
I coached the Northwest Ohio district quiz team for 26 years. I coached the Mount Vernon regional team for ten years. I was the District Director for three years but had to resign that when my family started to attend at Solid Rock.
When I was a young adult I questioned what I was good at and how I could be used at church. At first, all I could think of was that I was good at sports. So I coached local church baseball and basketball teams. Since I became comfortable with teens I started teaching teen Sunday School. I learned a lot as I taught.
Teaching Sunday School since I was 21 and Bible Quiz since I was 31 has helped me learn a lot about the Bible.
Driving the Solid Rock church bus – I found out that I was pretty good at being a male adult who cared about the fatherless. We have had many stay over night at the house before quiz trips, taken them to dinner, taught them to drive, tutored them in math and even taken some on college trips. Some of them even seem like family members.
As a Youth Director and Board member at a church I lobbied for getting a Youth Pastor. We did so and oddly enough the wife of the new Youth Pastor told me that they did not need my help. This was a main factor in why we left one church to attend another. Sometimes, I feel overwhelmed with rejection.
The church where I was driving a church made a decision to sell the bus. I really enjoyed driving that bus and the ministry I had being an adult for those inner city teens. Again, I had feelings of rejection.
Since I am being totally honest I will share this – at Solid Rock (Assembly of God church) they often had people who would fall down during the service. They call it Slain in the Spirit. This never happened to me. Also, I did not feel compelled to speak in tongues. In this regard I never really felt as if I really belonged at this church. Oddly enough, I was a church board member and was even asked to preach several times. In a weird way I belonged but I didn’t. Often I dealt with rejection even though I was such a big part. In James it says we all stumble in many ways – for me it is dealing with rejection. And associated with that is that I don’t pray as much as I used to.
Wrapping It Up
The Challenge: Based upon your S.H.A.P.E. Assessment above (the way God wired you), If you knew you couldn’t fail … and ‘lack of money, or time’ was not an obstacle… list your Top 3 Things you would ‘Focus’ your Life on, next to #1 Loving God & #2 Loving Your Neighbor (these would be your ‘3 God-Sized Dreams’ for your life)?
1. My Relationship with GOD
2. My Relationship with Others
- Putting Your Spouse First
- Your Kids Second
- Everyone Else After those
3. This year I had five grand-children quizzing. I would like to get other teens from Church of God Seventh Day quizzing. I would like to get some from SAF quizzing. I would like to hold practices and invite quizzers from SAF, New Hope United, New Vision, Primera Chuch of Naz and Crossroads to come to quiz practices. Since this is a God-sized dream i would like to volunteer at a youth home where we went horse-riding. I would like to tutor them in math and bring them also to quizzing. I would need a bus to do this. My God-sized dream would be to be taking 30 to 40 teens to quiz meets on South Texas District
4. I have been thinking of writing a book called Mr. Paul’s Theory of Evolution. The book would mainly be for young people going off to college and how to prepare them for hearing “millions and billions”. I would want to stress that it is just possible the Bible is the truth and millions and billions is just wrong. The book would include encouragement for young people to remain in the faith and to get involved in the struggle. I have dreamed of getting this book published and then giving it to a list of about 200 people I know.
5. We enjoy helping people with problems in their house. My wife and I can paint, do some wiring, we put up a lot of ceiling fans, things of that nature. Galatians says, As we have opportunity let us do good to all people, especially to believers.
